A Story of Celebration: 70th Anniversary Guided Tour at Disneyland

Disneyland first opened its gates on July 18, 1955, and this year the park is celebrating its 70th anniversary in true Disney style! Guests are invited to “celebrate happy” with beautiful decor, special entertainment, commemorative merchandise, and a limited-time guided tour honoring seven decades of Disneyland magic. If you love a good tour (like I do), this one’s a must.

Our tour began on Main Street, U.S.A., complete with official nametags, lanyards, and headsets. Fittingly, we started on the very steps where Walt Disney gave his dedication speech on opening day. His words still resonate:

“To all who come to this happy place: welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”

What better way to kick things off?

We got a peek into the origins of the Enchanted Tiki Room, a true gem in Adventureland! The story behind it – which I won’t spoil – is classic Walt Disney: a blend of imagination, innovation, and a few singing birds. His creativity and attention to detail never cease to amaze me!

One of my favorite stops was Autopia, one of the original Fantasyland attractions still standing today. Fun fact: back in the early days, guests could bump into each other (literally), and among those early drivers were Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra!

From there, we stepped back in time with a ride on the Disneyland Railroad and a cruise aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat – both rich in opening-day history.

The tour included a complimentary Lightning Lane entry to a select attraction. For us, it was Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway – the very first ride to star the iconic duo themselves. If you haven’t experienced this wild runaway train adventure (based on the award-winning cartoon shorts), it’s definitely worth the ride!

Bonus: the tour also included preferred seating for the return of the Paint the Night Parade and some specialty popcorn – the perfect finale to a day filled with nostalgia, surprises, and that one-of-a-kind Disney magic!

Tips for Booking the 70th Anniversary Guided Tour at Disneyland

1. Book early – This tour is only available for a limited time during Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration, and spots do fill up quickly. You can book through the official Disneyland app or website under “Tours & Experiences.”

2. Park admission is required – Keep in mind that the tour price doesn’t include park admission — you’ll need a valid park ticket and reservation for the same day as your tour.

3. Tour length and timing – The tour lasts about 2.5 hours, so wear comfy shoes and be ready to walk. Morning times are usually cooler and less crowded.

4. What’s included – You’ll receive a commemorative lanyard and nametag, a guided experience with a knowledgeable Cast Member, Lightning Lane access to a select attraction, and reserved viewing for the Paint the Night Parade (plus a snack!). Tour details can vary slightly.

5. Bring your questions – The tour guides are incredibly knowledgeable and love sharing Disney history. Don’t be shy!

6. Make it extra special – Celebrating something? Let them know! Cast Members love to sprinkle in a little extra magic when they can.

Whether you’re a Disney history buff or just love a unique experience, this tour is a special way to connect with the heart of Disneyland and celebrate 70 years of memories.
