When Is the Best Age to Take Your Child on Their First Cruise?

Cruising is one of my favorite ways to travel with family. It’s relaxing, fun, and full of adventure for everyone in your travel group. And while I truly believe you’re never too old to take your first cruise, you might be wondering: When’s the right time to take your child on their first one? Most cruise lines have a minimum age requirement of 6 months. Although for some longer or more exotic itineraries, it can be 12 months. As a mom who took both of my older kids on their first cruises as infants, I’ve learned a lot through personal experience. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding if your little one is ready to set sail.
Cruising with Infants: What to Expect

Cruising with an infant is not only doable but also enjoyable with the right expectations and a little extra prep. Cruise lines are generally very accommodating. On our cruises, we had a pack ’n play and a Diaper Genie waiting in our stateroom, and I was even able to request pureed food onboard. Many ships also offer nursery or babysitting services (typically for an additional fee), which can give parents a well-earned break. That said, cruising with a baby does take some serious planning. Unlike a theme park vacation where you can quickly grab extra diapers or baby food through a grocery delivery service, you don’t have that flexibility once you’re onboard. Cruise ships do carry a few infant essentials in their onboard shops, but selection is very limited (and dare I say more expensive!). They say when you travel with kids you pack everything but the kitchen sink. Well, when you cruise with infants, you take the kitchen sink, too! So, if you’re planning to cruise with a baby, make sure you’re packed for every “just in case” situation.
So… What Is the Ideal Age?

Looking back, I’d say the sweet spot for a child’s first cruise is when they’re eating some table food and a bit more mobile. This helps lighten your packing load (less formula and baby food) and makes dining onboard a lot easier. Here’s another important tip: If pool time is a must for your family, wait until your child is fully potty trained. Swim diapers are not allowed in any cruise ship pools due to strict hygiene regulations—this is true across all cruise lines.
No matter what age your child is, cruising can be an amazing experience for families. With a little preparation (okay, maybe a lot), it’s totally possible to have a smooth and magical trip with even the tiniest cruisers. But if you’re looking for that “just right” moment, consider waiting until they’re a bit older and more independent—it’ll make your experience a little more relaxed and a lot more fun.
